Laws and Regulations
In Vaughan, Ontario, the laws and regulations governing slip and fall incidents are primarily established by the Occupiers’ Liability Act and the common law.
The Occupiers’ Liability Act sets out the duties of occupiers of premises, such as property owners and managers, to keep their premises in a reasonably safe condition for visitors. This includes maintaining the floors, sidewalks, stairs, and other areas to minimize the risk of slips and falls.
Under the common law, a person injured in a slip and fall incident may be entitled to compensation if it can be shown that the property owner or occupier was negligent in maintaining their premises in a safe condition. This includes failing to warn of known hazards, repair known hazards, and maintain the premises in a reasonable state of repair.
